The Inspiration of Expiration

The concept of “forever” is a fantasy— rooted in the rose-colored glasses of perceived reality.

Everything has an expiration date.

And yet we still depend on the idea of “forever”.

The sooner we can detach ourselves from the fantasy of forever the sooner we can relish in the inspiration that comes from expiration.

Understand and remind yourself, “I have a small amount of time with this person— let’s make it count.”

Then when it’s over, you can thank them for the purpose they served for the season they were meant for.

We don’t get to decide how long the seasons are..

But we always go into it with the wide-eyed optimism of friendships and relationships aging like wine, when perhaps, they were milk.

Do we get mad at milk for not aging like wine?

No, we accept it’s expiration.

Do we get mad at wine when we pop the cork, and mourn for months that it turned sour?

No, we accept it’s expiration.

People are different aren’t they?

Why?

Because our expectations don’t support the reality of what is.

Detach yourself from the expectation that friendships & relationships last forever.

Don’t fear the reality of expiration.

Relish in the rarity of limited time with loved ones.

Maybe it’ll create a greater level of intentionality pursuing quality time knowing that nothing lasts forever.

So be inspired, while it lasts, and then when it’s over be grateful for the lessons, memories, good times & bad.

Be inspired by expiration.

The goal isn’t to make it last “forever” the goal is to make it last for the season it’s meant for.

Even “life-long” relationships expire. They don’t get the luxury of forever.

Enjoy them while they’re there, and be thankful for the time you shared when they’re gone.
